Judith Barnes Trotter, Carolyn Bethea Smith, Stanley Harewood, Gerald Washington, Richlyn Goddard, Ben Miller, Larry Thomas, Rosella Dillihay, William Curtis, Dorita Ford Braithwaite and Lewis Braithwaite were the original members the Atlantic City/DC Connection. All members of the Atlantic City DC Connection Scholarship Foundation are alumni of Atlantic City High School representing several graduating classes.
The first scholarship was awarded in 1994, and has continued each year henceforth with an scholarship award being provided to a graduating Atlantic City high School student. We have consecutively awarded one scholarship per year through 1998 in the amount of $500 per student, for four years. A total of $8000.00 has been awarded from1994 to 1998. The foundation was revamped in 2004 formulating two committees, one in Atlantic City and one in Washington, DC, which is how the name “Atlantic City/DC Connection” was formed.The Atlantic City/DC Connection, scholarship foundation became a Non-Profit 501c corporation in 2008. Presently recipients are awarded $1000.00 scholarships depending on available funds. Our goal is to increase the budget so that we can award two or three scholarships plus raise the dollar amounts of each award.
Scholarship recipients are introduced annual Atlantic City/DC Connection Scholraship fund raising Dance held in Atlantic City or Washington, DC. We are proud to have assisted each recipient not only a monetary award, but with also mentoring the students throughout their college experience. Each student is assured that committee members are accessible and can be reached 24 hrs a day 7 days a week. Periodic luncheons are held with the recipients to monitor their progress.
